What Is Foil Block Printing?

The process of blocking foil or Foil Block Printing has evolved gradually from similar processes used hundreds of years ago. The method started for decoration in ancient Egypt when a hammer was used to beat gold to paper thickness.

In the middle ages, monks used improvised machines to beat gold to print their books – leather-bound books were stamped with devices to emboss the book covers, and once the design was created on leather, the gold was then added by impressing with their hands. It was the earliest form of blocking foil and was widespread until the beginning of the 19th century.

How Is Foil Block Printing Done?

Foil blocking, now typically a commercial printing process, involves applying pigment or metallic foil to paper where a heated die (graved metal piece) is stamped onto the foil, making it adhere to the surface and leaving the die design on the paper. The foil is often gold or silver, but it may also be different patterns, or what is known as pastel foil, a flat opaque color.

Metal dies are made in the correct form for each color foil to be added from the finalized design. The dies are heated, then stamped with enough pressure to seal the paper to a thin layer of foil.

Blocking the foil creates a particular end result-offering a metallic finish over select or larger areas. Foil stamping has found many applications today and is becoming increasingly popular as a printing method. A wide range of colors and finishes from pastels to metallic is available. Most often used on covers for business cards, stationery, and brochure.
